RARE VINTAGE 1960's VOXSON VANGUARD REARVIEW MIRROR AM RADIO TUNER WITH SPEAKER
I bought this at an estate auction. I believe it is a model 736 and was able to be used in any car but may have come standard in the Lancia Appia and the Autobianchi Bianchina (maybe others?). On the back of the radio part it reads: "MADE IN ITALY PROTETTO DA BREVETTI IALIANI ED ESTERI (in English - PROTECTED BY ITALIAN & FOREIGN PATENTS)". It comes with the original box and paperwork. I tested it with a temporary wire connection (soldered the slip-over connectors to the 2 cut wires)-it is working with sound through the speaker and sounded like it is working fine except I did not use the tuner to try and get in any stations because unfortunately the tuning string is ready to break and will need replaced (it's connected now and turning the needle but the outer sheathing of the string gets bunched up over one pulley when you get mid way down the dial, and just the center of the string is holding it together-see pics. I only took off the mirror to inspect inside and did not remove the screws that would allow me to see behind the pc board. Everything inside (the side I can see) looks pretty good with no corrosion or noticeable problems. There are some rust spots on the bar behind the tuning needle. The speaker looks intact and again sounded like it was working fine. There is some rust on the metal casing. If you're going to use the radio, you'll need to reattach or replace the slip-over connectors back on to the two wires that were cut, but the original connectors are there if you want to use them. The box and paperwork is old and some pieces fragile, a bit dirty and schematic is wrinkled. The paperwork all came in an envelope marked Delmonico International Corporation, which was the distributor. There are 39 pictures to look through. Selling as is. Thanks!
GREAT ITEM, GREAT COLLECTIBLE!
Voxson made this same radio and a couple other variations/models under the names EMUD and Murphy for selling in different countries. Copied from the internet:
The Voxson-F.A.R.E.T. Vanguard is one of the very first Italian-made car stereos. It was manufactured between 1960 and 1965 by a company called Voxson, which was founded in 1952 (and is still in business today). The Vanguard is an interesting trapezoidal object made of black (brownish) and white plastic, which was installed in place of the rear-view mirror of the car – and of the
Fiat Bianchina
in particular.
