Description

General William Tecumseh Sherman captured the City of Savannah, Georgia in late December, 1865. An Original issue # 9 of the occupation paper,  The Savannah Daily Herald, Savannah, Georgia, January 20, 1865 complete w 4 pp of War news including  Military Orders by General Sherman announcing congratulations to his men from President Lincoln and General Grant  for the hard fought  taking of Savannah, also Occupation Orders from General Sherman and from General John Geary,  news including the Foundering of the Port Royal Ironclad Steam Packet Melville, a former blockade runner, off the Carolina Coast  w list of the 80 passengers lost, also General Geary will distribute beef from the captured Steamer Clyde  to the Poor of Savannah, the sinking of the Monitor Pataspo off Charleston, The Fall of Fort Fisher, North Carolina, General Hood"s Army defeated at Nashville , Stoneman's Raid,  also ads for ship arrivals, Army Sutler goods, etc. 4pp Complete, each page 14 x 10"  on seized Confederate paper stock.The Confederate paper stock is fragile.   Edge wear, age stains, archival repairs , Overall Fair and fragile,  and the first early Savannah Occupation newspaper I have seen.
