    Description

PAIR of Ornate Chinese Wood Carvings
This spectacular pair of wood carvings has detailed scenes of Chinese warriors and horses,
all well-carved. There's an overall feeling of
    action and movement.
The figures have expressive faces and even the horses have a wild-eyed appearance with flaring nostrils and flowing manes.
On the larger piece you see men brandishing swords at the top and men running and stumbling along the bottom edge. The horse at the far right turns to join the action.  In the taller carving, the horses zig-zag downwards from top to bottom. Prominent at the very center is a pair of crossed spears.
    Everything is placed
amongst intricately carved temples or pagodas, a brick tower, trees (willow and pine), and a bridge. Filigree work in the background adds to the ornateness.
Overall, there is a nice balance of carved areas and open space that highlight the depth of the carving and figures placed in the background. They are very 3-dimensional.
These are older carvings and as such they have minor, age-related losses.
In the carving on the left, it appears the end of a spear is missing from one of the horsemen at the bottom. The two men on the bottom right may have been holding something such as a sword at one time. There is a piece missing from the filigree which can more easily be seen if you look at the photo of the back side.
In the carving on the right, the men at top left and center right may have held swords at one time.  The man behind the horse at center is holding a sword with a small bit of the tip missing.
These issues are pretty typical for carvings of this type, and not particularly glaring due to the busy nature of the carvings as a whole.
The gold on these pieces appears aged and muted, not shiny bright or glaring.
On the reverse side, both carvings are finished in a cinnabar red and both have decorative hangers making them very easy to hang.
    Measurements
    :
Carving on the left:   16" high, 11.5" wide, 2" deep
Carving on the right: 18" high, 7" wide, 2" deep
(These pieces are slightly taller than the 16" and 18" noted above. I didn't include the plain "lip" at top and bottom in these measurements, only the actual carved area.  I didn't include the hanger in the measurement either.)
    THANKS FOR LOOKING!
