HEDY LAMARR, once called the "most glamorous woman in the world", was a
screen actress
from 1931 in Europe, and from 1937 to 1958 in Hollywood, California.
LAMARR co-starred in films with the most famous actors of the day, including Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, Charles Boyer, and Ray Milland, and was selected to play opposite Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca", but turned down the offer, which was accepted by Ingrid Bergman.
She also became famous as an
inventor and scientist
, most notably inventing the "spread spectrum" jamming technique for altering frequencies on torpedoes, for which she received a patent in 1942.  The concept has also been used in cell phones, military radios, wireless computer links, and Wi-Fi.
