  • Condition: Please refer to pictures provided to assist you with determination of condition. This book is 130 years old and the front & back covers still show some good color. There is discoloration and the word (album) on the front is missing part of the letter A. When you open the book you can see that the main body of the album is separating from the covers, but it's still attached and you can turn pages without fear of it coming completely apart. It would need to be rebound to make it solid again. There is one page (with no writing on it) that is detached. The writing on the insides of the book are in very good condition with the students and administrators names being very clear to read. there are two or three names where the ink slightly smeared, but not so you can't easily read the name. Overall, this book is in decent/good condition...the pure value here is the history which lies in the names that are found in this book.

    Description

As you read this information, please do your own research before purchase considerations and make sure that this book is right for your collection or research goals. It is a museum quality piece of Native American history with significance in many facets of the United States dealings with Native American families and how they were ultimately treated. Please ask any/all questions you may have before consideration of purchase. I have done my best to accurately describe this book...once again, please ask any/all questions you may have.
This is a very rare piece of history that can be utilized to research The Lakota Sioux Indian families at a very difficult time in their history and the history of the Unites States. This class roster was created on the first day of the new Boarding School on the Pine Ridge Reservation by a young lady named Emma F. King who was employed by the school. This was her personal album that she created on that first day for her records and was not the official property of the Boarding school itself. There are more than 100 names of the Indian school children who attended that 1st day of school (not all names are pictured in my listing) and there are several notes written from fellow administrators that were at the school that day with Miss Emma F. King.
Lakota Sioux family names like Washington Spotted Weasel, Lucy Medicine Elk, Steven Medicine Cloud, Stella Fast Thunder, Elizabeth Blue Cloud, Elizabeth Charging Wolf, Ada One Feather, Nellie Twist, and Bosa Red Kettle are just a few of the 100+ names represented in this class roster. These are names that have been cross-referenced with U.S. Indian Census Rolls to verify they were on the Pine ridge Reservation at the time the boarding school was opened. Some of the Administrators that signed the book include verified employees like Millie Curry, Mary B. Raymond, and Carrie Imboden of Virginia.
An important fact to remember is that in very close geographical proximity to the Pine Ridge Reservation and this boarding school was where the Wounded Knee Massacre took place on 29 December 1890. From a historical perspective, this school opened in April of 1889 and this was the entire class roster for that first day of school...researchers could utilize the information in this book for Indian families that might have been involved in the tragic events at Wounded Knee.

    The
    Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
    (
    Lakota
    :
    Wazí Aháŋhaŋ Oyáŋke
    ), also called
    Pine Ridge Agency
    , is an
    Oglala
    Lakota
    Native American
    reservation
    located in the
    U.S. state
    of
    South Dakota
. Originally included within the territory of the
    Great Sioux Reservation
, Pine Ridge was created by the Act of March 2, 1889, 25 Stat. 888. in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. Today it consists of 3,468.85 sq mi (8,984.3 km
    2
) of land area and is the second-largest reservation in the United States, larger than
    Delaware
    and
    Rhode Island
combined. The reservation encompasses the entirety of
    Oglala Lakota County
    and
    Bennett County
    , the southern half of
    Jackson County
, and a small section of
    Sheridan County
added by Executive Order No. 2980 of February 20, 1904. Of the 3,142 counties in the United States, these are among
    the poorest
    . Only 84,000 acres (340 km
    2
) of land are suitable for agriculture. The
    2000 census
population of the reservation was 15,521; but a study conducted by
    Colorado State University
    and accepted by the
United States Department of Housing and Urban Development
has estimated the resident population to reach 28,787.
Pine Ridge is the site of several events that mark milestones in the history between the
    Sioux
    of the area and the
    United States
    (U.S.) government. Stronghold Table—a
    mesa
in what is today the Oglala-administered portion of
    Badlands National Park
—was the location of the last of the
    Ghost Dances
. The U.S. authorities' attempt to repress this movement eventually led to the
    Wounded Knee Massacre
on December 29, 1890. A mixed band of
    Miniconjou
    Lakota and
    Hunkpapa
    Sioux, led by
    Chief Spotted Elk
, sought sanctuary at Pine Ridge after fleeing the
    Standing Rock Agency
    , where
    Sitting Bull
had been killed during efforts to arrest him. The families were intercepted by a heavily armed detachment of the Seventh Cavalry, which attacked them, killing many women and children as well as warriors. This was the last large engagement between U.S. forces and
    Native Americans
and marked the end of the western frontier.
