    Description

This newspaper is an original, not a reproduction, and is a complete paper in four pages. It is a bi weekly paper, "Jersey City Chronicle", from April 22, 1863. It was after the Emancipation Proclamation by Lincoln, and just after a huge review of the Army of the Potomac by Lincoln, to re-invigorate the demoralized troops. Lincoln had just removed McClellan as General. The front page is devoted to elections which had just taken place. The interior pages have wonderful articles by a correspondent to the Army encamped at Belle Plain Virginia. There is a wonderful funny anecdote about Lincoln's humor during the troop review, and all kinds of great information about the war. There is an article about the war, including that all the ironclads but one had made it past the battlements at Vicksburg. There is a lovely piece that looks like a letter to the paper regarding the English and their involvement with the Confederates, and another about how if the African Americans were to be allowed into the Army, they needed to be afforded all the rights and everything the same as the regulars. It is really a great piece, that doesn't have much of the important war information that was in the big papers, but some great stuff that was smaller in scope, but really interesting, in the thoughts of people of the day. The War was BY NO MEANS assured, and that comes through quite clearly! There are articles about sporting events, and the back page has some really wonderful ads. It is a great paper, that won't disappoint. I have others, including another one from this same year and this same paper (but not quite as interesting). The paper has lots of rag in the content (as opposed to tree pulp), so it hasn't deteriorated much. There is tearing along the interior seams where it was removed from a library binding.
