The 8 page paper is dated Tuesday, September 17, 1861 and is Vol. XVII, No. 1702. The Civil War era paper has a large picture of "The United States Treasury Notes" on the cover. Within the paper there are many articles covering the war, with titles such as: COL. JOHN A. WASHINGTON SHOT, WAR NEWS SUMMARY, THE BATTLE IN WESTERN VIRGINIA, SEIZURE OF CONFEDERATE GOLD, THE ADVANCES OF THE REBELS, and GEN. LEE IN COMMAND OF THE REBELS to name a few. There is also a large map on Washington and its Vicinity on the 2nd page. The paper also contains local news and advertisements.
The paper has wear and a general discoloration throughout. Along the left border / center fold of the paper there is some heavier wear and small tears, creases and darker areas of discoloration.
